(Inspired by ‘The Outlaw Ocean’, a book by Ian Urbina)
Album Notes
A few months ago I was honored to be invited to The Outlaw Ocean Music Project, to compose music inspired by what I read in the book ‘The Outlaw Ocean’, a New York Times best-seller written by Ian Urbina @ian_urbina who is a Pulitzer Prize winning investigative journalist.
The particular subject that stood out to me most is the harmful ways we treat life, that of people, ocean species and terra firma. Disregard for the good of all these forms of life saddens the heart. Yet, there is hope. As we become aware of such things written about in the book, action begins to take place to stop this destructive treatment.
A peculiar bit of irony I found was a man who, essentially imprisoned on a fishing boat, saw his prison as a means of getting to freedom. “Ship going to change my life” he said. Regardless of the horrible living and working conditions he has hope of better. I think this rises up from the depth of the soul, a remembering of a promise.
The title of the EP, ‘A Sacred Promise’, is for the common theme of the music: life is sacred and the promise to respect and cherish all forms of it should be kept.
